The Colorado: A Handwritten Font with Real Character

There’s something oddly satisfying about opening a blank brand board and seeing the first stroke of a new font come to life. For me, it’s always a moment of anticipation—will this typeface fit the vision? Will it feel authentic? Will it work across all the touchpoints we’re planning?

Recently, I found myself in that exact situation while working on a boutique identity project for a local handmade shop. The client wanted something warm, approachable, and slightly nostalgic. They were looking for a font that felt like it had been written by hand, not just designed. That’s when I pulled out The Colorado.

The Colorado is a natural all caps handwritten font that captures the authentic feel of real handwriting. Designed with organic strokes, the subtle imperfections give it a casual, authentic look, and it feels like it could have been scribbled on a napkin. It’s not perfect—it’s messy in the best way, which makes it feel human.

I started by testing it on the logo concept. The first pass was promising. The bold, expressive strokes gave the design a sense of energy and personality. It felt like it could stand alone as the primary typeface for the brand. But I wasn’t done yet. I needed to see how it would hold up in different contexts.

Testing The Colorado in Real Design Scenarios

Next, I placed The Colorado on a packaging mockup. It looked great on the product label—casual but legible, with just enough character to make the brand feel unique. I also used it on a business card and a website header. In both cases, it worked well as a headline or display font. It didn’t feel too heavy or too light; it struck a nice balance between readability and style.

One thing I noticed early on was that The Colorado is best suited for short phrases or headlines. Its organic nature makes it less ideal for long body text or formal corporate use. That said, it’s still versatile enough to be used as an accent font, decorative element, or even a supporting typeface when paired with a more structured font.

I also tested it on social media graphics and Instagram posts. It added a personal touch without overwhelming the content. On a printed card, it felt like it belonged there—like someone had actually written the text by hand. That’s the kind of authenticity that can really make a brand stand out.

Font Pairing and Brand Identity

When it comes to font pairing, The Colorado works best with fonts that complement its personality. I’ve found that pairing it with a clean sans serif or a modern serif font creates a nice contrast. For example, using it alongside a simple geometric sans like Montserrat or a classic serif like Georgia gives the design a balanced feel.

In the context of brand identity, The Colorado can help create a cohesive visual language. It’s especially effective in creative studios, bakeries, or skincare brands where the aesthetic is more artisanal or personal. It doesn’t try to be everything—it focuses on what it does best: conveying warmth and authenticity.

However, I would caution against using The Colorado in projects where readability is a priority. At smaller sizes or in longer texts, it can become difficult to read. It’s not the most practical choice for a website’s body copy or a newsletter. That said, it’s still a strong option for headers, logos, and other high-impact elements.

Designing with Confidence

One of the things I appreciate about The Colorado is that it comes with a range of styles, alternates, ligatures, and swashes. These features add versatility and allow for more creative expression. Whether you’re designing a poster, a flyer, or a branded template, these options give you the flexibility to tailor the font to your needs.

It’s also worth noting that The Colorado supports multiple languages and is available in various file formats, including webfonts. This makes it suitable for both print and digital applications. If you’re working on a multilingual project or need the font to be embedded in a website, you’ll find it offers good support.

Before using The Colorado in final client work, I recommend testing it in different environments. Look at how it looks on a shop sign, a product mockup, or a homepage hero section. Pay attention to how it interacts with other design elements and whether it maintains its charm across all platforms.

Finally, don’t forget to check the commercial font licensing before using The Colorado in client work, packaging, templates, websites, or print-on-demand products. Ensuring proper licensing is essential for both legal and professional reasons.

Overall, The Colorado is a font that brings personality to a brand. It’s not just a tool—it’s a statement. Whether you’re building a logo, designing packaging, or creating social media graphics, it has the potential to elevate your work with its unique, handwritten charm.
